Baccarat’s genealogy is an ambiguous one and the modern American casino version has became almost exclusively reserved for the high rollers.

Baccarat in Italian means “zero,” indicative of the value of face cards in the game. Baccarat’s roots seem to lie in Italy; however, the early history of the game is sketchy. Games became so popular during the Middle Ages that a number of the more popular games of modern casinos have origins in this era. An early version of Baccarat that became familiar in France is Chemin de Fer. Chemin de Fer is still a version of European Baccarat played in most traditional European casinos.

From France, Chemin de Fer, or some version of it, was subsequently carried to England where the game was once again transformed into the more traditional version with which most Americans are familiar. However, in England the game became synonymous with the wealthy nobility and continued to retain this tradition even after arriving in the United States.

Baccarat Comes to the United States

Baccarat did not become a widely accepted casino game in the United States until the mid-twentieth century, when the Las Vegas casinos were broadening their game offerings. Baccarat was nearly exclusively reserved for wealthy high rollers. The demand for it among all gamblers, though, spawned a version called Mini Baccarat. Mini Baccarat is a smaller version of the regular game. In comparison to the game that up to fourteen high rollers played for high stakes, the everyday gambler now sat at a Mini Baccarat table that accommodated half that number and utilized much lower stakes.

The Baccarat Game

The full version of Baccarat accommodates up to fourteen players, seven of whom sit around one end of the table and the other seven occupy the opposite end. Between them is a Croupier, who calls the game, and two Dealers, one for each end of the table. Players each have a betting field marked on the table in front of them where they place bets for “Banker,” “Player,” or “Tie.” Tie bets are the riskier of the three with the house edge climbing exponentially higher than either Banker or Player bets.

Each player has the opportunity to play the Banker position. The Banker player is passed the card shoe. The player with the shoe deals two hands of two cards each, one hand goes to the Dealer, who holds the Player hand, and the second hand is held by the player who is the current Banker. Participants place bets on whose hand they think will win, Player, Banker or Tie. The purpose of the game is to get a hand as close to or equal to 9 without going over. A hand that equals 9 is called a “natural.”
